I'm a trans youth activist based in NYC and I work with youth led groups where we discuss social issues. One of the organizations I work with is DYCD we the youth agenda and over the past summer we hosted an event called the Mayoral town hall it was an opportunity for youth to get their voice out to the upcoming candidates of the mayoral election. My role was informing the candidates on how trans youth experience discrimination not only at home but in the school environments and provided recommendations on how we as trans youth can be supported. The poem I'm submitting is a piece I wrote for my spoken word I performed at the event, I created this writing piece as a way to acknowledge all the ways society discriminates us trans individuals and I also used it as an outlet to hold our oppressors accountable and acknowledging who exactly are our oppressors. This poem calls out each and everyone of them(for the most part).
What is something you learned about patriarchy and what is something you would like to change about what you learned?
I've experienced patriarchy at the hands of oppressors through toxic masculinity, transphobia, homophobia & sexism. Patriarchy plays a significant role as to why people are so comfortable with treating trans people differently as if we're anything but human. Patriarchy is the reason why men are getting away with attacking and killing transpeople. I disagree with patriarchy as a whole there is no use for it. Patriarchy fuels the oppressors against people that are proud in their identity.
