Amatonormativity, as you will soon read about in my piece, is the idea that the ideal life involves two people married with kids. I try my best to show all of the flaws in that idea using my writing, as well as show the harmful environment it creates. As someone who is asexual and on the aromantic spectrum, I have to deal with amatonormativity every day. By submitting this piece, I hope to let the world know what I, and others like me, have to learn to live with.
What is something you learned about patriarchy and what is something you would like to change about what you learned?
I learned that the patriarchy has a much wider influence than you would initially think. The idea of the atomic family is the symbol of the patriarchy, and those ideas have spread into every part of our life. The belief in amatonormativity, that the ideal life is two people married with kids, is why there is such strong bias against asexual and aromantic people. I would like to change the idea that in order to be happy, you have to be married with kids. It's absurd that you need someone else to be happy, that you can't enjoy life on your own. It is another symbol of the patriachy's widespread issues, and it needs to change.
