Another world is possible

Please tell us about your submission (maximum 600 words)

Inspired by feminist Arundhati Roy’s words of wisdom “Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.” This piece offers us hope of the world we are dreaming into reality and building towards. As a feminist and advocate for gender equity, the burnout and heavy emotions felt in doing this work is real and often depleting. This piece is a reminder, a beacon of hope urging us to forge forward for justice. While the path to dismantle the patriarchy isn’t always clear, we know we will find a way just like our maternal ancestors did before us.

What is something you learned about patriarchy and what is something you would like to change about what you learned?

I learned that the Patriarchy shows up in cultural norms. We are socialized to adhere to the gender binary and traditional gender norms that place caregiving on women. When we step out of these norms we are shamed and punished. One thing I want to change is this culture of patriarchial violence. We do this through including art, storytelling, cultural strategy, and narrative change as a part of our work. We must challenge these cultures of violence and create new ones that center care and self determination.
