This collection of poems is intended to serve as a critique of modern feminism. In recent years, some of the focus of feminist work has shifted from equality to misandry. These poems caution readers about the dangers of misandry and how it can be just as harmful as misogyny. Additionally, I wanted to focus my writing on the exclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in modern feminism. Feminism is catered to empower heterosexual women, dismissing the patriarchal oppression that queer people face. Gay men are especially excluded from feminist practices because they are men; however, they face marginalization as a result of misogyny as well. LGBTQ+ equality is an important step in achieving equality of the sexes. Women cannot be considered equal to men until all women are equal to all men. Additionally, my collection of poems touch on topics such as body image issues, double standards, make up, rape culture, cat calling, and feminine feminism. My list of eight rules and poems on “How To Be a Feminist” are intended to be satire to highlight the deficiencies in modern feminist practices.
What is something you learned about patriarchy and what is something you would like to change about what you learned?
I learned that both women and men uphold the patriarchy, and I wish that both men and women can work together to tear it down.
