I Can Wear What I Want
Please tell us about your submission (maximum 600 words)
We can choose many forms of expression or reliance to challenge the patriarchy. My favorite form of expression is through gender nonconformity in fashion, in which the idea of gender fluidity can be displayed in a variety of ways. Gender is a social construct and should be treated as such. My submission demonstrates that there are no set rules for gender, the clothes we wear, and how we are perceived in them. In our patriarchal society however, we feel pressured to conform to strict gender roles. If we continue to freely express ourselves in fashion, no matter how we identify, we can dismantle archaic ideas like gender conformity that have been ingrained in our society.
What is something you learned about patriarchy and what is something you would like to change about what you learned?
I've learned that patriarchy and racism are interrelated and contribute to the suppression of female and nonbinary people of color in society. As a young black woman, I would like to change the ways in which the patriarchy is discussed as a problem that affects women, and instead focus on the multitude of ways that the patriarchy contributes to the subordination of various marginalized groups.
