Kitchen Play Set

For most of American History women have been expected to take care of household tasks such as cooking and cleaning, while the men went to work. Decades later, while women also have jobs, they are still expected by men to provide meals for the family because this patriarchal society has led us to believe that providing for your family by cooking is a women’s obligation. These gender roles have negative impacts on our society because a specific gender shouldn’t be expected to provide a certain way. “Kitchen Play Set” shows a parental figure teaching their son how to cook using a kitchen play set, encouraging him to develop skills to take care of his family in the future. The picture to the right shows this son all grown up and ready to share the responsibility of cooking with his future family. This illustrates a patriarchal society in the future, one that starts when we ignore gender roles and encourage our youth.

What is something you learned about patriarchy and what is something you would like to change about what you learned?

Patriarchy is a word used to describe the organization of our current societies’ ideas about gender. It says that men should be in charge and dominant, while women are inferior and submissive to these men. It creates specific gender roles within society, that are extremely harmful. Teaching men that crying makes them “weak”, “less masculine”, and therefore less of a man. Creating stereotypes for woman such as calling us “emotional” or “too sensitive”. This causes these genders to feel like they are in a box and like they need labels to identify with. People are not able to express themselves properly, because this society has created only two categories: Male and Female. Although created by men, the patriarchal society that we live in is harmful to all genders. I would like to change this and hope for a world in which there is balance by placing more women in power who will challenge the myth of male superiority.
