This is a poem that I wrote my senior year of high school that I find myself going back to and reading often. I was preparing to graduate high school, and I was discussing gender norms and misogyny in my creative writing class. The class was largely female, and my teacher was male. We were telling him about how misogyny and sexism starts very early, especially in school. We talked about our own experiences, and he was very shocked to learn about the things we were telling him. Later that night, I wrote this poem about my own experiences. I decided to talk about different ages because the misogyny and sexism I experienced from a young age really did start that young and continue to this day. I think my poem captures the small things about growing up a girl that are sexist but totally normally in society, and it also captures how those things change with age. All of the things mentioned in my poem are things that either I have gone through or those close to me have gone through. Towards the end of the poem, I open it up and talk about the things girls go through from a more universal lens because that's what the whole poem is about: universal experience.
