Contest Details

What is the Dismantle Patriarchy Contest?

The Dismantle Patriarchy contest is an opportunity to welcome ideas from young voices and minds about how we might literally dismantle — take apart, break into pieces, deconstruct — patriarchy.

What are the Contest Prizes?

There are two sets of prizes – one set is for high school students (US Only) and the other is for college students (Across the Globe). Each set will have ten $1,000USD prizes. (There will be ten high school winners who will each be awarded $1,000USD, and there will be ten college winners who will each be awarded $1,000USD.) High School finalists will be chosen by the YouthACT Council and College finalists will be chosen by the College Committee.

What is Patriarchy?

Patriarchy is a social system in which power is held by men, through cultural norms and customs that favor men and withhold opportunity from women. In addition, patriarchy prioritizes masculinity and men as the ideal way of being over femininity and women. Patriarchy also punishes gender variance, which significantly hurts transgender people and anyone who deviates from assigned gender roles. (Source: The Guardian, Robin Dembroff, May 19, 2019)

Goals

There are many reasons to Dismantle Patriarchy and some of our goals are to:

  • Encourage healthy and empowered expressions of gender identity
  • Empower youth with exposure to new gender justice language/culture
  • Bolster existing curriculum by including access to info on gender, sexual health and socialization such as consent
  • Center voices of marginalized folk and communities in on-going youth programming and education initiatives

Dismantle Patriarchy Discussion Guide

Through this contest process — essentially an educational process and a creative envisioning — we anticipate that patriarchy  will be viewed by youth in new and very different ways. This guide has been structured for use in the classroom, or by an individual.
